I am a divorced dad and divorce attorney. I have been both for about 13 years. If often joke with people that I handle clients’ divorce and custody situations from 9 to 5 and I handle my own the rest of the time.
I live in North Carolina with my daughter. My ex-wife and I share custody of her on a 50/50 basis. The most difficult aspect of the joint custody arrangement is the time that I don’t get to spend with my daughter. That is our situation, though, and I’m so blessed and fortunate to be able to spend the time that I do have with her. Many divorced dads aren’t so lucky, and I remind myself of that constantly. That is all the detail that I am willing to disclose, as my daughter may read this (or may have read it), and if I’ve learned one guiding principle over the years, it is this: let children be free of the emotional baggage of their divorced parents. The kids are innocent, and they should be free to grow up without being asked to referee their parents’ issues.
I currently practice in the North Carolina counties of Richmond, Moore, Cumberland and Wake. Over the years, I’ve practiced in at least 15 districts in North Carolina – some large and some really small. I truly enjoy the variety. My practice focuses on the issues of divorce, child custody, child support, alimony and equitable distribution. I also handle estate planning matters such as will and trust drafting. There is a surprising amount of overlap between family law and estate planning, and I enjoy both.
